4. Cycle with plants and humans Plants are able to convert the energy of sunlight into a food supply. They can also be used to purify air and water. In addition, plants are aesthetically pleasing so their presence could help mitigate the detrimental long-term psychological effects of working in a machine-filled stainless steel environment. Although certainly not needed for shortterm flights, plants will play an important role in providing a food supply and in creating a hospitable environment for people in any long-term space colony they establish.
